(Blood Horse Article).Article from Claiborne Farm Website: Bred by an American in Paris, *Princequillo was conceived in France, but when World War II broke out, his pregnant dam was shipped to Ireland where he was foaled. While his sire remained in France and became a casualty of German air fire, *Princequillo and his dam were shipped over high seas and smuggled through a German submarine blockade to safety. Eventually shipped to the United States for his racing career, *Princequillo arrived in poor condition after his dangerous journey. Sold shortly after arriving in New Orleans, he was subsequently claimed by Horatio Luro for the Boone Hall Stable. In Luro’s capable hands, *Princequillo developed into an effective distance horse winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Saratoga H., and Saratoga Cup. He was retired to the Hancock family’s Ellerslie in Virginia. Although Princequillo probably would have earned his way to Claiborne after the success of his first two crops, he was moved to Kentucky after his second season at stud. A welcomed addition to the Claiborne stallion ranks, A. B. (Bulll) Hancock later recalled that he had been quite keen on the horse because he won at six furlongs and then continued to prove himself as a stayer. Referred to as “Mr. Fixit” at stud for his ability to sire sound, correct foals, Princequillo is most recognized as the sire of 1958 Horse of the Year, three-time Turf Champion, and leading money winner Round Table. The leader of the General Sire List in 1957 and 1958, Princequillo also sired Champions Misty Morn, Hill Prince, Dedicate, and Quill. His greatest legacy, however, is as a top broodmare sire as his daughters cemented his immense influence on the breed. Through his son Raise a Native and maternal grandsons Northern Dancer and Icecapade, he has wielded a huge influence on the Thoroughbred. Native Dancer's HONORS: National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame (inducted in 1963), Saratoga Hoofprints Walk of Fame (inducted as part of the inaugural class in 2013), Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame (inducted in 2014), American Horse of the Year (1952, 1954 co-champion with One Count in 1952), American champion 2-year-old male (1952), American champion 3-year-old male (1953), American champion handicap male (1954). Native Dancer appeared on the cover of the May 31, 1954, issue of Time magazine. Native Dancer's Preakness trophy was sold at auction through Doyle Auctions for US$100,000 in May 2018. Although Graustark won only two stakes races during his short racing career, he made such an impression that there was serious debate as to whether he was the superior of his contemporary Buckpasser, winner of four championships including honors as 1966 Horse of the Year. The question must remain unanswered as the two never met on the track before a foot injury ended Graustark's racing career. At stud, Graustark became a notable influence for stamina, particularly through his daughters. Hall of Fame jockey Braulio Baeza, who rode both Buckpasser and Graustark, once asserted that Graustark would have beaten Buckpasser easily had they met in later years, however, he gave the nod to Buckpasser. Grey Flight was trained by James “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons. A gray mare, Grey Flight was small but very attractive and was commonly held to bear a close resemblance to her sire, Mahmoud. Neatly made, well-balanced and close-coupled with a feminine head, she had a good shoulder and powerful hindquarters. Trainer "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons clearly considered her a pure sprinter, starting her only once at a distance beyond six furlongs. Grey Flight is one of 24 important broodmares profiles in Edward Bowen's Matriarchs: Great Mares of the 20th Century.
